Consultation has concluded
Free camping involves camping outside of paid campgrounds on public land or using campsites specially designed for free campers. Across the District Council of Grant (DCG) there is increasing demand for free camping sites due to our beautiful natural landscapes and amazing scenery. As a result, there are campers accessing sites which are not designated for free camping which has a number of negative consequences including environmental impacts and safety risks.
To assist in meeting this demand Council has considered our current paid and free camping sites across the District and are looking to increase our free camping options.
Currently there are three paid camping areas and five designated free camping sites within the DCG:
Paid camping sites:
Port MacDonnell Foreshore Tourist Park;
Pine Country Caravan Park; and
Canunda National Park.
Free camping sites:
Tarpeena Sports Ground;
Carpenter Rocks Recreation Reserve;
Brown Bay; and
Cape Northumberland Carparks 1 and 2.
A total of 23 potential free camping sites have been considered by Council and these locations have been assessed based on factors such as:
Fire safety;
Size;
Proximity to townships and service facilities;
Previous complaints or interference with other tourists; and
Possible concerns from landowners in potential locations.
For details regarding the 15 sites not being proposed please see the Council Report in the Documents tab to the right of the page.
Nine new free camping sites are being proposed and are out for the community to give us their feedback.
The proposed sites are:
Surfers Way Beach Carpark 2
Surfers Way Beach Carpark 3

816 Eightmile Creek Road

Orwell Rocks
Allendale East Recreation Reserve
Clarke's Park, Port MacDonnell (Added 2/11/21 following OCM resolution on 1/11/21)
