Background

The District Council of Grant provide a Mobile Garbage Bin (MGB) collection service to residents within defined collections areas. Residents within these areas are given two bins (one rubbish and one recycling) which are collected kerbside on a fortnightly rotation.

Council is currently undertaking multiple route expansions within the district. The aim of these expansions is to ensure that all residents in townships and larger settlements have access to kerbside general waste and recycling services and at a more affordable rate than would be available if sourcing the service privately.

The MGB collection service is considered to be an essential service and the delivery of it aligns with Council’s Strategic Plan 2024-2034.

What happens to my expression of interest?

Using data collected in the map below, Council staff will prepare a proposal of MGB collection service expansion areas for the new financial year. This will be reported in the next Draft Annual Business Plan and Budget. Community members will have an opportunity to have their say about these expansions and other proposed services and projects for the financial year in the associated consultation process. This typically occurs between April and May of each year.

Following consideration of feedback received during the Draft Annual Business Plan and Budget consultation process, the final plan will be presented to Council for endorsement. Once endorsed, residents within the MGB collection service expansion areas will be delivered two 240L bins (one with a red lid (rubbish) and one with a yellow lid (recycling)). An annual service charge of approximately $300.00 will also be added to the property owner's rates notice at this time, calculated on a pro rata basis.

Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) collection service

At Council's Ordinary Council Meeting held on Wednesday 23 April 2025, it was approved to begin rolling out an opt-in Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) kerbside collection service following a successful trial. The service will initially be made available to residents in Port MacDonnell, Moorak, Compton and Nene Valley, the same areas which participated in a preliminary trial commencing at the end of 2024, for an annual charge of $85.

Council also endorsed to carry out a second free FOGO trial in Yahl, Tarpeena, Allendale East and Kongorong after receiving sufficient interest in the service during the community consultation period. Eligible households will soon receive information directly on how to participate in the second trial, what to expect from the service and how to opt-in and out of the newly endorsed FOGO kerbside collection service.

Residents and tenants not within the opt-in or second trial service areas may submit an expression of interest to be included in the service.
