Local Heritage Survey Stage 3
The District Council of Grant is seeking community feedback on a Draft Report prepared for Stage 3 of the Local Heritage Survey Project. The Draft Report makes recommendations for sites to be listed as heritage places of local significance.
Background
In the 2023-24 budget Council resolved to undertake a Local Heritage Survey Project in four stages to identify and ultimately list places of significance in the district. The primary aim in identifying places of local heritage significance is to preserve the heritage and cultural values through conservation, ongoing use, and adaptive reuse.
Stage 1 of the Local Heritage Survey included a thematic heritage framework study which was completed in November 2024. At the 16 September 2024 Council Meeting it was resolved to undertake public consultation as part of stage 1.
Stage 2 included a Council-wide local historic site identification survey and listing recommendations, which was completed in January 2026. Stage 2 included site inspections of the potential heritage places.
Public consultation undertaken to date, including the feedback received from the site investigations, resulted in some objections to heritage listing from landowners. Those places were removed from further consideration and the number of potential listings was refined from approximately 250 down to 98 individually significant places.
Stage 3 prepared the Draft Detailed Item Assessment and Recommendations Report and included stakeholder consultation in March 2026 with local history groups and community experts to gather additional information.
The Draft Detailed Item Assessment and Recommendations Report is now available for the community to review and provide feedback on. The Draft Report includes 98 individual heritage places of local significance, and 6 places recommended for representative designation within an identified Historic Area in Port MacDonnell.

What's Next?
Feedback received during the consultation period will inform whether any modifications are required to the final Detailed Item Assessment and Recommendations Report before being presented to Council for adoption. If adopted, the project will proceed to Stage 4.
Stage 4 will be the final stage of the Local Heritage Survey Project and will consist of a Code Amendment to implement the recommendations in the report by introducing statutory controls into the Planning and Design Code.
