Background

The Mount Gambier Regional Airport Master Plan is a document created for the purpose of ensuring continual improvement, sustainability, accountability and growth of the Airport.

The last Master Plan created for the Mount Gambier Regional Airport was endorsed in 2016 and was known as the Mount Gambier Airport Master Plan 2016 - 2026. It was identified that the majority of actions within that Master Plan have been completed, resulting in the creation of a new Master Plan anticipated to be actionable from early 2025.


What is proposed?

The Draft Mount Gambier Regional Airport Master Plan 2025 - 2035 has been shaped by adhering to regulatory and government policy requirements and incorporating perspectives through collaboration with key aviation stakeholders who formed an Aviator's Jury, Elected Members and Council staff.

A series of short-term, long-term and advocacy projects have been developed based on feedback from stakeholders and are proposed to be pursued by the District Council of Grant over the next 5-10 years. The key projects detailed in the Draft Airport Master Plan include:

Feedback can be submitted by:

  • Mount Gambier Regional Airport: Airport Road, Wandilo.


Feedback will be accepted until 5:00pm 22 November 2024.


Next steps

Feedback submitted during the consultation period will be reviewed by Council staff and amendments to the Draft Mount Gambier Regional Airport Master Plan will be made where appropriate. A refined Airport Master Plan will then be presented to Council on Monday 16 December 2024 for endorsement.

    The District Council of Grant unveils the final Mount Gambier Regional Airport Master Plan for 2025 to 2035, marking a significant milestone in the progression of the region’s aviation industry.

    At Council’s recent Ordinary Meeting, the final Master Plan was presented and subsequently endorsed for action, commencing in the new year, following extensive consultation.

    District Council of Grant Mayor Kylie Boston acknowledged the contributions of community members and aviation stakeholders in the development of the document.

    “Feedback received during the consultation process confirmed our Master Plan balances the needs for sustainable regional aviation and aspirations of our community. We appreciate the efforts of those who engaged and participated in this process,” Mayor Boston said.

    “We also extend our thanks to members of the Aviator’s Jury who’s expertise and perspectives over the past 12 months were extremely valuable in the initial development of the Master Plan,”

    The Aviator’s Jury combined airport tenants, people will a passion for aviation and aviation specialists to consider the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the Airport, future projects and the facility’s overall direction across two workshops, alongside Elected Members and Council staff.

    “Together, with the collaboration of aviation professionals and our wider community, we are confident that this Master Plan will guide the growth and development of our Airport over the next decade.”

    The Mount Gambier Regional Airport Master Plan for 2025 to 2035 describes a variety of short-term, long-term and advocacy projects for Council to action over the next 10 years.

    District Council of Grant Chief Executive Officer Darryl Whicker explained the key projects stem from Council’s core strategic document, the Strategic Plan 2024 – 2034.

    “The Master Plan is our roadmap designed to ensure the continual improvement, sustainability, accountability and growth of the Airport and regional aviation,” My Whicker said.

    “The projects developed complement and help achieve our 5 goals under Community, Economy, Environment, Infrastructure and Council. These projects will also ensure that the Airport remains a key asset for regional travel and connectivity, while supporting tourism and economic development well into the future,”

    The Mount Gambier Regional Airport Master Plan 2025 – 2035 describes key short-term projects to achieve in the next 1 to 5 years including, but not limited to, a small playground, increasing renewable energy systems, carpark extension and investment prospectus.

    Further long-term projects will be worked towards over the next 5 to 10 years including various runway extensions and resurfacing, development of an onsite commercial precinct and public toilet refurbishment.

    The District Council of Grant will also advocate for projects such as an airport history and display trial, flying school and increased tourism throughout the Limestone Coast in partnership with key stakeholders.

    “Through strategic planning and ongoing stakeholder engagement we are committed to delivering a high-quality Airport that meets environmental, safety and operational standards.”

    The District Council of Grant has revealed its newest Draft Mount Gambier Regional Airport Master Plan for 2025 to 2035 and is now asking for feedback.

    At the October 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting, the document was presented and approved for community consultation after being developed alongside key aviation stakeholders.

    District Council of Grant Mayor Kylie Boston said over the last 12 months Council have worked with community and business representatives in an Aviator’s Jury, Elected Members and Council staff to consider the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the Airport, future projects and the facility’s overall direction.

    “The Aviator’s Jury combined Airport tenants, people will a passion for aviation and aviation specialists who helped shape shared short-term, long-term and advocacy projects for the next 10 years,” Mayor Boston said.

    “I would like to thank those who have contributed through the engagement process already and encourage others interested to provide your feedback.”

    Mount Gambier Regional Airport Manager Nick Serle said the development of the new Airport Master Plan comes after identifying that a majority of actions within the previous Master Plan have been completed.

    “The new Airport Master Plan has a strong focus on activating the whole Mount Gambier Regional Airport facility which aims to give passengers, their families and friends something extra to do while at the terminal.” Mr Serle said.

    Feedback on the Draft Mount Gambier Regional Airport Master Plan 2025 – 2035 will be accepted until 5:00pm Friday 22 November 2024.

    At the Ordinary Council Meeting held on Monday 19 February 2024, Council was presented with an update on the Airport Master Planning process and seek Council endorsement of the process to create the Airport Master Plan particularly the planned community engagement. Council subsequently resolved to:

    1. Receive and note Council report Airport Master Plan as presented on 19 February 2024.
    2. Council endorse the process and timeline outlined in this report for the creation of a new Airport Master Plan.
